When you think on the lines of buying new furniture for your home a lot of questions crop up in your mind, like whether it should be upholsters or leather furniture, what color is should have and the style that will jell with your existing décor of your room.
But the foremost thought in you mind is to look for some piece of furniture that will last long and continue to look good even after prolonged use. Yet, we often find people whose furniture begins to look old and worn out a bit too early than expected, whereas there are many with furniture as old as twenty years, yet it looks almost new. Ever wondered why it is so? The simple reason is that your furniture and upholstery certainly needs cleaning and some minimal maintenance.
The point is that many people are not aware of proper techniques of cleaning furniture. Before you decide to clean your sofa, you should understand that the exercise of cleaning any type of furniture is a lot more effective if the furniture is adequately taken care of on a regular basis. The process of upholstery cleaning starts from vacuuming your furniture regularly. All the accessories that you get at the time of buying your vacuum cleaner are designed to help you cleaning of your sofa by reaching all the crevices. If you start using it more often there will be considerable reduction of accumulated dust and dirt in your furniture.

An additional precaution for cleaning your upholstery is the use of slightly moisturized, almost dry piece of cloth while dusting headrest and arms of sofa and chairs. You would realize that cleaning of arms and headrest is very typical as these areas are most likely to collect body oils, which we welcome particularly during dry weather as these prevent the skin from cracking, but these are not healthy for your furniture, more so if it’s a leather furniture. If you fail to take care of these areas, soon you’ll have worn out upholstery around them.
And, while you are dusting, vacuuming or cleaning your furniture don’t forget those pillows and cushions. Bring them out and beat them at times. It helps to loosen dirt and dust particles in those areas where the vacuum can’t possibly reach. Further, keep them rotating and change the sides while keeping them back on your furniture. Such measures help to prevent wear marks on the cushions and pillows that are used more often. You see, most of us tend to occupy the same seat time and again and this makes prominent wear spots over long use.
And finally, if you like the furniture to keep looking good for many years, it’s important not to carry your food there, and do not allow your pets to use it. Yes, accidents do happen and in case you happen to spill some food or drink on the upholstery you need to be very careful while cleaning it. And, remember that the piece of cloth used for cleaning should be just moist; it shouldn’t be too wet or absolutely dry. You may be aware that apart from oil and grease, water also causes stains, which are really difficult to remove. Moreover, while cleaning, do not rub the stain instead just blot it as its rubbing causes it to enter the fabric.

In case you have leather furniture at home, you should know that it needs regular care and maintenance for protecting the leather and extending its life, thus making your expense worthwhile. Appropriate care of leather furniture necessarily involves the use of specially made leather cleaning agents and conditioning products, enabling you to enjoy using this furniture for many years.
For a prolonged life of leather it’s important to use the right products for its maintenance so that it retains its softness and natural beauty, enabling you to derive the maximum pleasure and satisfaction. You know that particles of dirt and body oils tend to get accumulated on any furniture. That necessitates the use of mild cleaners to get rid of these. Use of a good leather conditioner provides a coating on the leather and helps it to keep stains away and reduces the chances of its getting faded prematurely.

In case you have been neglecting your furniture for too long and it has already developed stains, especially if it’s old leather furniture, it will be recommendable to seek professional help for restoration of leather furniture back to its original class. Quite often it so happens that people try self designed remedial measures and cleaning chemicals to achieve the purpose, but end up further spoiling the leather.
Caring of your furniture certainly requires the use of leather conditioners apart from the use of leather cleaners and protective creams. Continuous use and exposure to sun and heat exhausts the oils employed at the time of tanning of leather to give it a natural glow. These days the leather conditioning items that we get are designed to compensate for the loss of oils and rejuvenate the older leather, giving it new looks and providing protection against future damage. Unless a good quality leather conditioner is used once in six to nine months, the leather will become dry and hard and eventually develops cracks.

When applying leather conditioner, keep the application light and do not soak the leather very heavily. Allow the conditioner to penetrate the surface of leather for sometime before applying the next coat of conditioner. Leather conditioners with waxes or silicones should not be used as these tend to be too heavy and wouldn’t allow the leather to breathe in its natural manner.
The leather conditioner should be applied using a soft lint free cloth like micro fiber. It will be good to slightly moisturize the cloth with water before use. Gently rub the conditioner in the nap of the leather and cover its entire surface.
You get many conditioners in the market, but you should look for one that helps protecting the furniture. Make it a point to read the label and follow instruction of use, especially if your happen to have old leather furniture, which is often very valuable.

That makes it important to know how to clean white furniture properly. We are aware that many of the commercially available cleaners could have very strong cleaning chemicals that could damage the wood or white upholstery. So, wouldn’t you like to know of some cleaning agent that could conveniently be prepared and used at home for this purpose? Here are some of those:
• Carpet Cleaner: Make a paste of one cup of borax mixed with a cup of white vinegar and salt. Rub this paste onto the carpet and let it remain like that for a couple of hours till it dries up and then vacuum.
• All-Purpose Scouring Powder: Shake over some baking powder on the surface need to be cleaned and gently rub with a damp sponge.
• Removing Water Rings: softly rub mayonnaise or toothpaste onto the water stain with a damp cloth. Once you get rid of the ring, buff the whole surface of the wood to get rid of any residue.

• White Furniture Polish for Varnished Wood: Prepare a mixture of a cup of warm water and a few drops of lemon oil. Spray the mixture onto a cotton cloth, using just enough so that the cloth is slightly damp. Wipe off all varnished surfaces with this damp cloth, and subsequently wipe off with a soft dry cloth.
• Polish for Unvarnished Wood: Mix 2 tsp. lemon juice with an equal amount of pure olive oil. Rub the furniture by applying wide strokes so that the polish is evenly distributed.

Cleaning of carpets and furniture is best achieved by using steam cleaners. That’s because the steam and hot water can enter the fibers of plushy fabrics and loosen dirt, which is subsequently removed by strong suction. Moreover, the items being cleaned do not take too long to get dried up. This system is far better than using just water that leaves thing wet for a very long time. Another advantage is that steam is able to penetrate into the furniture padding to kill dust mites and other allergens that tend to get trapped there.
One may buy a furniture steam cleaning machine or it may be hired from a rental outlet or a grocery store.

Choosing the right cleaning agent to be used on such cleaning machines is a simple affair. All that you need to ensure is that it should have been especially made for steam cleaning. However, you should take care that the cleaning agent has low concentration of sudsing, because any product with high content of susdsing agents would leave behind a residue of dried cleaning agents. Low-sudsing cleaner are a bit more expensive, but they help taking better care of expensive pieces of furniture, making their purchase worthwhile.
Though one can do steam cleaning by oneself, it become very convenient to have a helping hand. The machine has a built-in reservoir where steam is generated. When you’re working alone, you’ll be required to stop very frequently for refilling the reservoir. But, with a helper around, one person can continue cleaning while the other can ensure that the water source remains filled. That makes the job much faster and less tiring too. After all, steam cleaning your furniture is quite a laborious job.

Before you steam clean your furniture, you need to remove stains on your furniture using stain removers, because the steam cleaner fails to do that part of the job as effectively as one would expect. For removing the stain follow instructions on the packing as suggested by the manufacturer. Having thus removed the stain, carefully clean every upholstered part of furniture with the machine and ensure to suck it as dry as possible. Steam cleaning doesn’t guarantee you fresh-like new looking furniture, but it is nice to have that feeling that it’s cleaner than it was earlier with fewer allergens than it had before.
